Where do the sails come from?
The sails are donated by local sailors. Many of us don't want to throw out an old sail, even when the boat is long gone. Sails are made of very durable and long lasting materials that aren't easily recycled. For these reasons, a lot of our sails have spent a while in storage. The rest of them are most likely from racing sailboats which replace their sails more often to keep the boats sailing as fast as possible.
Are they waterproof?
They are better described as weather-resistant. Some of the waterproof and UV coatings on the old sail material has usually worn off before it was remade into a bag. They are still very strong and durable. They are quick drying, and also washable. See this page for more info about cleaning the bags.
Are they all made of sails?
Yes, we incorporate sails in all of the bags that we make. Sails come in many shapes and sizes, most commonly they are made of white dacron which is a type of polyester fabric. We also like the look of many high tech types of racing sails. These use different types of fibres laminated together forming interesting patterns to add dimension to the bags.
